The Ohio State University Airport will host National SAFECON competition May 16-21, 2011.
Mon 5/16/2011 to 5/21/2011

The Ohio State University Airport announced it will host The National Intercollegiate Flying Association (NIFA) Safety and Flight Conference (SAFECON) May 16-21, 2011.

SAFECON SIGNIFICANTLY increased OSU air traffic when held in 2006:

OSU hosted SAFECON 5/1/06 - 5/14/06 which hosted 30 flying teams from across the United States and increased operations by 15,000 events.

The SAFECON Daily reported “OSU TRAFFIC UP 5X” stating “… daily traffic was averaging between 1200-2000 operations with maximum traffic peaking at approximately 200 operations per hour.”

OSU Airport Newsletter June 2006 reported: “During this time period, OSU Tower watched its average 400-500 op day increase to approximately 1200 per day. Two days topped the 2000 mark, with a single day peaking at 2114 operations. The total traffic count for the event reaches nearly 15,000 by mid May, in turn giving OSU Federal Contract tower another milestone in the 9 year relationship that has been going since July of 1997.”

The resulting significant increase in air traffic and aircraft noise was of great concern for area residents.

As a result of that concern:

WOOSE representatives brought questions about SAFECON before the joint meeting of OSU Airport Noise and Advisory Board on May 11, 2006.

During that meeting it was agreed the event increased air traffic and noise over residential neighborhoods.

Then Dean of the College of Engineering, Bud Baeslack, indicated the event would not be returning to OSU airport anytime soon.

KOSU hosted 2007 SAFECON at Rickenbacker Airport after WOOSE met with OSU Airport Director, the flight team and Department Chair who suggested “back-to back” competitions at KOSU were unacceptable for the communities impacted.
